Many people hear the word “halal” and immediately think of religion. But halal meat is about quality, cleanliness and transparency – and that matters to everyone, Muslim or not.

Halal is More Than a Religious Requirement

In Arabic, halal simply means “permitted.” When it comes to food, it describes a strict set of requirements that govern everything from how an animal is raised to how it arrives on your plate.

But let’s look at what that actually means in practice – not from a religious angle, but from a quality standpoint.

What Does Halal Slaughter Actually Guarantee?

  1. The animal was healthy before slaughter Under halal standards, only healthy, unstressed animals may be slaughtered. This is not optional – it is a mandatory condition. A sick or injured animal cannot receive halal certification.
  2. The blood is fully removed from the meat During halal slaughter, the animal’s blood is completely drained. Blood accelerates spoilage and creates ideal conditions for bacterial growth. Without it, the meat stays fresher longer, looks better and tastes better. Don’t take our word for it – this is what our customers tell us, again and again.
  3. No stress hormones in the meat In conventional industrial slaughter, animals often endure significant stress. Stress triggers the release of cortisol and other hormones that become embedded in muscle tissue – and stay there. Halal standards require calm, humane handling of animals throughout the process. Less stress means cleaner meat.
  4. Strict hygiene standards throughout Halal certification doesn’t just regulate the moment of slaughter. It covers the entire chain: housing, feed, processing and storage. At Bonus, we go one step further – we exclusively produce halal meat, with zero mixing with conventionally slaughtered products. In Hungary, this makes us unique.

What About Antibiotics and GMOs?

Halal standards prohibit unnecessary medication and growth-promoting substances. We take this further: our animals are fed exclusively GMO-free feed, we do not apply routine medication, and our meat is free from antibiotic residues. We don’t just say this – our certifications prove it.

Who Verifies All of This?

Doing the right thing isn’t enough – it has to be verified. Our certifying body is the IIDC, recognised as one of the strictest halal certification organisations in the world. We also hold an IFS certification, one of the highest international standards for food safety.

These are not decorative certificates. They represent regular, rigorous inspections.

Did You Know? Traditional Hungarian Slaughter Followed the Same Principles

This might surprise you – but it’s no coincidence.

In traditional Hungarian rural culture, slaughtering an animal was always a solemn, meaningful act. A blessing was spoken over the animal – giving thanks for the life it was offering as food. This wasn’t mere custom. It was a way of thinking: the animal’s life has value, slaughter is a responsibility, not just a production process.

And when it came to the meat itself, the blood was carefully removed. The method – a healthy animal, calm conditions, full blood drainage, respect for life – is essentially identical to what we call halal slaughter today. It just wasn’t called by that name.

Modern industrial slaughter has moved far away from all of this. Speed, volume and cost efficiency have become the primary drivers – the animal’s wellbeing, the quality of the meat and cleanliness have taken a back seat.

We are returning to what once worked. With a different name, different certifications – but the same values.

So Why Does It Matter to You – If You’re Not Muslim?

Because halal quality is not a question of religion. The principles behind it – a healthy animal, clean slaughter, no unnecessary chemicals, humane treatment, rigorous oversight – are exactly the principles that every health-conscious person cares about.

Whether you follow a ketogenic diet, avoid processed foods, or simply want to know where your food comes from – halal meat is a natural choice.

Your food is your life. That’s what we believe. And we put that belief into every single product we make.
